THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION, Uncertain mint. Circa 480 BC. Drachm (Silver, 4.32 g). Rider, wearing Persian bonnet and holding bow, on horse galloping to right. Rev. Incuse square, diagonally divided. Seemingly unpublished, but cf. Tkalec AG, 28 October 1984, 63 for a very similar obverse, probably by the same engraver. Of the greatest rarity, apparently unique. Toned as found and with slightly crystalized surfaces. Good very fine.
This is an extraordinary coin that is only paralleled by the equally rare piece that is cited above. That shows the same horseman, undoubtedly a Scythian since he wears his characteristic hat and carries a bow, but with a running boar on the reverse. That is clearly a scene of two parts with a hunter and his prey. The present piece just shows the beginning of the scene: perhaps the desire to illustrate the whole ‘story’ impelled the mint authority to authorize the replacement of the usual incuse square with an actual type? In any event, the source of these coins seems to be Macedonia, which makes the use of a ‘Persian’ or eastern horseman, understandable. The Attic standard weight, however, implies that the coin was issued after the Persian defeat in the war with Athens.

Tiridate, fratello del re partico Vologese, depone la sua corona di re d'Armenia davanti alle insegne romane e ad una statua di Nerone promettendo che l’avrebbe ripresa solo dalle mani dell’imperatore direttamente a Roma. In questo modo si sottomette a Roma. L’omaggio di Tiridate a Nerone, promesso nel 63, ebbe luogo solo nel 66 al termine di un viaggio via terra che durò nove mesi (impedimenti religiosi gli proibivano di attraversare il mare). Tiridate, scortato da notabili del suo paese e da 3000 cavalieri fu accolto a Roma da Nerone con sontuose cerimonie e prolungati festeggiamenti che incisero pesantemente sul Tesoro romano.

The fact that oval shields are depicted with such frequency by both the Celts themselves and their enemies, in such a broad spatial and temporal context, logically indicates that they had a political and cultural significance that went beyond their purely military function, i.e. also served as a symbol of political authority and power.

Johnston has interpreted this remarkable reverse design as a relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos, which would make it the earliest Greek map and first physical relief map known. On the right (north) are the mountains Tmolos and Messogis between the river valleys of the Caÿster and Maeander, to the left of which are three mountain ridges (Madranbaba Dagi, Karincali Dagi, and Akaba Tepesi). Johnston follows Six in suggesting that the coins were probably struck under the Persian general Memnon at Ephesos, circa 336-334 BC, in order to pay his army after he had captured the city, but before his defeat by Alexander at the Battle of Granicus in 334. However, Johnston’s theory has been the subject of some doubt, most recently by Leo Mildenberg.
