ILLUSTRAZIONE: Opliti greci. In alto a destra un peltasta. I peltasti erano riconoscibili da uno scudo ligneo, spesso a forma di mezza luna, privo di bordatura, ricoperto in genere di cuoio o anche in feltro, dipinto con facce stilizzate; veniva impugnato facilmente e portato a tracolla. Gli indumenti erano costituiti da una corta tunica senza maniche per favorire i movimenti di tiro del giavellotto; un mantello intarsiato di pelle di orso, degli stivaletti di cerbiatto, allacciati davanti e stretti in sommità, detti “zeira”; un copricapo in pelle di volpe a punta con lunghi lembi a difesa delle orecchie su modello del cappello frigio.

Privi di spada disponevano di due o più giavellotti, la cui lunghezza variava dal metro al metro e mezzo; i quali venivano scagliati dopo un breve tratto fatto di corsa contro il nemico. Una volta eseguito il primo lancio rientravano nei ranghi.

I compiti loro assegnati si dividevano tra la fornitura di copertura delle falangi all'inseguimento dei nemici in fuga, nonché proteggevano i fianchi dell'armata durante gli spostamenti.

Gli opliti aprivano le ostilità marciando cadenzati al passo della musica dei flauti (in basso a sinistra un flautista).

The legitimate heir Valentinian III and his mother Galla Placidia were in Constantinopolis. Theodosius II sent an army west to oust Johannes and the commander Aspar entered Ravenna unopposed. Johannes was captured and executed in Aquileia.

Commentaire à propos de cet exemplaire : Poids très léger. Sur cet exemplaire, au revers, nous avons un caducée, qui n’est pas signalé sur les exemplaires connu comme celui du SNG de Copenhague (Cop. 1520). Le caducée appartient à la panoplie d’Hermès avec le pétase et les sandales ailées.
Commentaires : Le monnayage de Copia comprend outre le sextans, le quadrans, le triens, le semis et l’as qui semblent avoir été frappé selon l’étalon romain semi-oncial..
Historique : Thurium, la nouvelle Sybaris, fut fondée en 443 avant J.-C. sur le site de l'antique Sybaris, détruite en 510 avant J.-C. par les Crotoniates. C'était une colonie athénienne panhellénique, peuplée initialement par des Messéniens, chassés par les Spartiates. Son monnayage d'argent fut très important. Elle fut refondée en 194 avant J.-C. sous le nom de Copia par les Romains. A la fin de la République, de nouveau, le nom de Thurium est attesté. Octave-Auguste est né à Thurium le 23 septembre 63 avant J.-C..

Ex Kim Werner Collection (Heritage 3020, 9 September 2012), lot 25030; Numismatic Fine Arts Winter Mail Bid Sale (14 December 1989), lot 809.  Ptolemy I Soter "(Savior") was born the son of the Macedonian nobleman Lagus; a later tale that he was an illegitimate son of Philip II was probably fabricated. He was a friend and intimate of Alexander III the Great from boyhood and accompanied him on his career of conquest 333-323 BC. Upon Alexander's death in 323 BC, Ptolemy was granted the prized satrapy of Egypt, richest of the formerly Persian provinces. Alone among the Diadochi ("successors"), he was content with his sphere of influence and did not risk all to succeed Alexander as supreme leader. However, he was not above using the great conqueror's image and reputation to secure his own position. He hijacked Alexander's funeral cortege as it was proceeding back to Macedon and had his embalmed corpse formally interred at Memphis in Egypt; later the body was relocated to a splendid mausoleum in Alexandria. Ptolemy's early coinage carries Alexander's image and name, as seen on this remarkable tetradrachm, which depicts the great conqueror wearing an elaborate elephant-skin headdress in honor of his victories in India. Ptolemy declared his own kingship in 306 BC and was the only one of the Diadochi to die peacefully, in his bed; his dynasty ruled Egypt until the fall of Cleopatra VII, in 30 BC.

Yad'ab Dhubyan Yuhargib, circa 155-135 BC. Tetradrachm, AR 16.27 g . yd'ab dbyn bn[?...] ("Yad'ab Dhubyan, son of [...]" in South Arabian letters Male head r., with curly hair. Rev. mlk qtbn ("king of Qataban" in South Arabian characters Bearded male head l., with hair tied around ending in a knot. Triton sale XVII, 2014, 404. Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second specimen known. An issue of great importance and fascination with two very appealing portraits, toned and about extremely fine / good very fine The coinage of south Arabia consists principally of Sabaean, Qatabanian and Himyarite issues, together with smaller issues identified as Hadramite and, perhaps, Minaean. Some of the Sabaean and Himyarite issues are relatively plentiful and bear familiar types, but other of these coinages are seldom encountered and are only rudimentarily understood. In the latter category are the Qatabanian issues that bear a variety of interesting portraits, including this piece, which appears to be of an unpublished variety. Until a similar coin appeared in the recent Triton XVII auction (lot 404), the tetradrachm denomination was unknown for this series. The present coin is a valuable addition to the corpus. It was struck with the same reverse die as the Triton example, but due to its slightly different centring it adds details to the inscription. Most importantly, it was struck with a different obverse die that, while sharing the same portrait type, has a distinctly different inscription that demands careful study. The portrait accompanied by the variant inscription is engraved in a most intriguing style. The subject appears to be a heavy-set, middle-aged man with a powerful neck and a distinctive nose; he is clean-shaven and his curly locks of hair are cut short. Though it possibly is the image of a deity, it likely represents a person, perhaps the issuer of the coin. In a general sense the bearded and long-haired portrait on the reverse is more remote and idealized than its companion. However, they both have similarly broad necks and distinctive noses and brows, which may indicate that if the second portrait represents a person, the two may be related. One might speculate that they are co-rulers (a father and his destined successor?) or that the current ruler is portrayed along with a venerated ancestor.

Bukephalos was the famed steed of Alexander 'the Great'. As legend has it, Alexander broke the wild horse when no one else dared go near — not by force but by turning the horse's head toward the sun, understanding that Bukephalos was simply afraid of his own shadow. No one but Alexander could mount the horse after. As one history puts it, "Long did this noble animal share the toils and dangers of his master; and this was the horse that Alexander delighted to honour." So excellent was Bukephalos in battle that when he was once lost, Alexander is said to have threatened the destruction of an entire country unless he was returned (which he was).

Qui non sussistono dubbi sui personaggi e sul mito raffigurato al rovescio della moneta.

Alirrozio, mitico figlio di Poseidone e della ninfa Eurite, avendo fatto violenza ad Alcippe, figlia di Ares, fu ucciso dal dio presso una fontana alle pendici dell’Acropoli di Atene. Ares fu quindi chiamato in giudizio da Poseidone (che era poi suo zio) davanti al tribunale divino sul colle che prenderà il nome di Areopago. In assenza di altri testimoni e visto che Alcippe aveva confermato la versione del padre d’aver eliminato Alirrozio perché le stava usando violenza, la corte divina diede ragione al dio della guerra e lo assolse.

Secondo un’altra versione del mito, Alirrozio era geloso di Atena in quanto lei aveva ottenuto l’Attica, che a suo parere doveva essere destinata al padre Poseidone. Egli tentò quindi di tagliare l’ulivo che la dea aveva donato alla regione, ma l’ascia che impugnava, sfuggitagli dalle mani, ne provocò la decapitazione.
