Gli Elvezi (lat. Helvetii) sono un’antica popolazione celtica che dapprima (forse dal 5° sec. a. C.) abitava fra il Reno, il Meno e il Giura Svevo e alla fine del 2° sec. a.C. si trasferì nel territorio dell’Elvezia, odierna Svizzera.

Sehr schön Quinare dieses Typs kommen im Norden. und Nordwesten der Schweiz vor, beispielsweise im Fund Balsthal von 1839/40. Erworben bei der Münzen und Medaillen AG, Basel, Liste 100 (1951),105.

Rarissimo Gamshurst Stater, imitazione degli stateri di Filippo II (Triton XVIII).

CENTRAL EUROPE, Helvetii(?). Early-mid 3rd century BC. AV Stater (17mm, 8.28 g, 8h). Imitating Philip II of Macedon. Gamshurst type. Head of Apollo right, wearing laurel wreath / [Φ]IΛIΠΠ[OY], charioteer, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left, driving biga right; kantharos below. Sills 98.2579 (dies 3/3 – this coin); D&T 3021; Flesche 282; Lanz –; KMW –; Zürich 376. Good VF, lightly toned, small scrape on reverse. Very rare, Sills located thirteen Gamhurst staters, and only one in CoinArchives.

Il potin (post # 5)

Il significato letterale di ‘potin’ in francese è quello di ‘pettegolezzo’ e ‘ciarle’, ma nell’accezione numismatica è sinonimo di bronzo bianco per indicare una lega di rame contenente un’alta concentrazione di stagno o di piombo, nella quale sono presenti a volte tracce di altri metalli. Questa lega era ampiamente utilizzata dai popoli gallici, principalmente quelli della Gallia settentrionale, per produrre le loro monete, Il più delle volte per fusione e non per coniatura.

La lega tradizionalmente utilizzata in Francia per la fusione delle campane e composta dal 78% di rame e 22% di stagno, viene comunemente definita "potin" dagli addetti alla produzione.

Very rare variant with retrograde reverse legend. Almost very fine/extremely fine.

These rare quinarii can be ascribed to the Helvetii and are best known from the Balsthal hoard, found between Basel and Solothurn in 1839/40.

The Helvetii were a tribe or tribal confederation occupying most of the Swiss plateau. According to Caesar, they were divided into four subgroups or pagi. Of these Caesar only names the Verbigeni and the Tigurini, while Poseidonios mentions the Tigurini and the Tougeni. They feature prominently in the Commentarii de Bello Gallico, with their failed migration attempt to southwestern Gaul.
