Bronzo di Antiochia sull’Oronte (Seleucia di Pieria). La città fu capitale dell'Impero Seleucide fino al 63 a. C., quando i Romani ne presero il controllo, facendone la sede del governatore della provincia di Siria.

Greek. SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Antioch. Civic issue, circa 48/7 BC. Æ Tetrachalkon (22 mm., 11,51 g). Laureate head of Zeus right / ΑΝΤΙΟΧΕΩΝ ΤΗΣ (to r., downwards in two lines) ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΛΕΩΣ (to l., downwards), Zeus Nikephoros seated left, cornucopia in inner left field; date beneath throne; all within laurel wreath. VF. McAlee 43; RPC 4216; HGC 9, 1366.

Le lettere della data in parte fuori tondello dovrebbero essere ΙΘ e quindi indicare l’anno 19 dell’era pompeiana, corrispondente al 48/7 a. C.

ΕΠΙ ΚΟΜΟΔΟΥ Turreted, veiled, and draped bust of Tyche left, palm over shoulder; HΠP (date) before / ϹΕΛΕΥΚΕWΝ ΤΗϹ ΙΕΡΑϹ ΚΑΙ ΑΥΤΟΝΟΜΟΥ Thunderbolt on cushioned stool; all within wreath. RPC II 2025B. VF. Rare.

Good VF, glossy olive green patina.

I bronzi del periodo del mio che ho postato al # 26 hanno spesso una contromarca sul dritto che in un primo momento è stata descritta come “testa di Apollo a destra in ovale”, ma poi si è pensato che raffigurasse Cleopatra per contrassegnare le monete circolanti nei territori siro-fenici che le erano state donate da Marco Antonio.

Bronzo (4,5 g, 16-17 mm) attribuito a Seleuco II Kallinikos (246-225 a. C.); zecca di Sardi. Tipologia: testa di Eracle con copricapo in pelle di leone a dx. / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ. Apollo seduto sull’onfalo con una freccia nella mano destra e la sinistra sull’arco al suolo. Monogrammi a dx. e a sx. Sardi. SC 657.8.
