I have created a new website on Roman Republican coins, Monete Romane Repubblicane

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/

The site includes a history of Roman Republican coinage and numismatics, newly written, and organised into 35 short sections, spread over ten webpages, and with links to all the related coins.

There are 1,350 different Republican coins pictured on the website, making it the largest online Roman Republican coinage database, and one of the largest ever published in any medium. The coins are organised into 35 sets matching the write-ups. They are arranged in a proper historical and chronological manner according to Crawford http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Catalogu...tml#CrawfordRRC

except for the coins of 70-50BC where the Mesagne hoard dating is used. http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Hoards.html#Mesagne

Every coin is different and properly described. Hundreds of these coin types, mainly rare bronze types or early silver with symbols, cannot be found anywhere else on the internet. The coins are continually being added to, and should soon reach 1,500 types.

Many friends have permitted me to quote their work on the website.

Abridged versions of Professor Buttrey's important work on Morgantina and the date of the denarius

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Hoards.html#Morgantina

as well as his study of the Pompey Pietas denarii http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Mints.html#Pietas

Phil Davis has shared texts on Cornufucius

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Studies.html#Cornuficius

and on Dacian imitations of Republican denarii http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Provincial.html#Dacia

Mark Passehl has contributed a complete article on the coins of the Aemilii Lepidi. http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Coins_History.html#lepidus

Richard Shaefer and Richard Witschonke have provided contributions on new coins published in the Goodman collection

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Introduc...#GoodmanBronzes

and on the arrangement of the pre-denarius coinage

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Catalogues.html#ERClist

Additionally there are many new contributions from my own keyboard, scattered at various points on the website. These cover a diverse range of subjects. For example I reproduce many of the best plates from one of the greatest 16th century numismatic books, with engravings that are miniature works of art as great as the coins they illustrate. http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Coins_History.html#antique

Some thoughts on the early denarius coinage,

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/History....#Postsemilibral

a lot of information about rarity and rare coins

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Auctions.html#Rarity

Grueber's footnotes,

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Catalogues.html#footnotes

the Mesagne hoard

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Hoards.html#Mesagne

and a host of other ramblings crop up from place to place. In the sections on the history of RR coinage there is a special focus on numismatic techniques, for example the process used to sort out the pre-denarius coinage issues, or, for later coins, how hoards are combined with historical research on magistracies to arrive at dating. This may be interesting even to students of other coinage eras.

The original focus on coin books remains, but has been greatly expanded. Many new books have been reviewed and existing reviews have been revised and expanded. I now include quite complete listings (with some reviews) of articles from the Celator and Numismatic Chronicle

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Books.html#Celator

as well as a number of other numismatic journals. Many other areas also have expanded coverage.

It is my intent to regularly add material to the website, and I have already a list of new material to be added. The contents list of the website is so long that I cannot really summarise it here. The best thing is if you explore it yourself. Please enjoy.

The Limetanus is a very good coin, it was bought in 1984 from a very old dealer in London. The weight is good, 3.73 grams, and it has even wear and old toning. However it had been cleaned roughly before 1984, and this has left surface scratches and some flatness e.g. the edge borders. It also had an uneven strike so some parts of the coin are more strong than others e.g. top side obverse and left side reverse. But in my opinion it is certainly not a fake. (non un falso).

Coinarchives shows many different obverse and reverse styles for Limetanus. There are many different Mercury heads, and there are many different clothes of Ulysees. The coin in my collection seems to me normal, regular, ordinary, good, it is like many coins illustrated on Coinarchives. I hope all the 1350 coins on my website are also good!

Dera Andrew,I don' like dog and kane's style.they seem very different from the others coins.Maybe because your coin is scrached and then they are in this way.I don't know..I would hear others opinions..

http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.ph...341&Lot=481

Queste monete hanno cani differenti anche.

Qui non ci è cane

http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.ph...=17&Lot=274

Il cane non ha una testa

http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.ph...341&Lot=480

Forse questo è un uccello

http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.ph...91&Lot=1876

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36294246@N03/3410390662

I'm sorry Andriew,I like your web and it's really professional.I was only warried about that coin. That's all!

Marco

http://rrimitations.ancients.info/copies.html

=====

Marco, thank you for writing about this coin. There is an old story about this coin. It was the first coin I owned. I bought it in 1984. I began to study the history of the Roman Republic because of this coin. Because of this, I defended it much too much, I was blind. I now agree. it is not perfect. I discussed the coin with other friends. Everyone thinks that it is ancient but unofficial. Specially Richard Shaefer and Phil Davis commented. Phil Davis thinks that it is part of this group:

http://rrimitations.ancients.info/copies.html

Maybe it is not from Dacia but it is ancient. Richard Shaefer and other people thinks similarly. So I have changed the description of the coin. Marco, I am happy that you wrote about this coin. I hope you find other interesting things on my website.
