Dramma suberata imitazione celtica del Grande già citata, caratterizzata dalla testa di Eracle rivolta a sinistra (Triskeles Auctions 16).

Lower Danube. Imitating Alexander III of Macedon. 3rd-2nd centuries B.C. Fourrée drachm (15 mm, 3.20 g, 6 h). Head of Herakles left, wearing lion's skin headdress / AΛΞΞAIIΔPOY (sic), Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, K (retrograde). Cf. Price B15 (head right, retrograde B below throne), otherwise seemingly unpublished. A couple of tiny breaks in the plating. Neat with head left. Very fine.

Nella didascalia si richiama un’analogia con l’imitazione barbarica Price B15, ma la dramma pare sia inedita.

Altra dramma suberata imitazione celtica orientale del Grande caratterizzata dal diritto con la testa di Eracle rivolta a sinistra (Münzen & Medaillen 38).

Sul rovescio è forse raffigurato un delfino nel campo a sinistra; monogramma sotto il trono; nel campo a destra i resti di una scritta. La dramma non è pubblicata.

Sul tetradramma Price 3971

Il tetradramma di Alessandro contrassegnato con il simbolo della rosa nel campo a sinistra del rovescio e le lettere ΔIO sotto il trono di Zeus classificato Price 3971 è stato a lungo ammirato come una delle più belle emissioni della sua monetazione. È stato battuto in Egitto, probabilmente non molto tempo dopo la morte di Alessandro, il 10 giugno del 323 a.C., si ritiene nella zecca di Menfi, anche se qualche studioso lo attribuisce a quella di Alessandria.

Senza la guida di Alessandro e senza un chiaro o legittimo erede del vasto impero che aveva creato, i generali di Alessandro combatterono tra loro e frammentarono l'impero, dividendolo in satrapie che nominalmente gestirono per conto dei successori di Alessandro, il suo fratellastro mentalmente debole Filippo Arrideo e il suo figlio non ancora nato. Tolomeo prese l'Egitto, riconoscendone il grande potenziale. Inizialmente mantenne Cleomene, il custode che Alessandro aveva lasciato al suo posto in Egitto, come suo vice, ma in seguito lo rimosse a causa dei suoi numerosi eccessi e della cattiva gestione, e si appropriò degli 8.000 talenti che Cleomene aveva accumulato nel suo tesoro. Una parte di questo tesoro fu trasformato in nuova moneta, come questo tetradramma, e utilizzato per finanziare le ambizioni militari di Tolomeo.

Exceptional for issue; the finest known.

Zervos, in his original 1967 ANS Museum Notes article, thought these early Egyptian Alexanders were struck much earlier, but he later clarified his position in his 1974 Ph.D. dissertation, stating that he thought it most likely that they began in 324-322 BC, but most likely after Alexander III’s death. He also abandoned his original idea of annual issues, and preferred to use, controversially, an issue scheme based on the amount of dies per variety combined with an assumption of a continuous steady output by the mint. His analysis of the hoards somewhat supports his contention, but the evidence is not conclusive. Lorber (NC 2005) came to the same conclusion regarding the late start of production, c. 323, but maintains that the theory of annual issues is still relevant. While both numismatists agree that the coinage began at a mint in Memphis, they disagree on the date of the opening of a mint at Alexandreia, with Zervos preferring a date of 320/19 while Lorber dates the event to c. 311. The output of the mint during its production of Alexander type coinage was considerable, although they are fairly rare in the market today. Most of the examples from this particular issue are illustrated in previous sales and published museum collections. A comparison to those examples reveals that the present coin is arguably the finest known of this variety, and it is certainly among the finest of all the known Egyptian Alexanders.

O. Zervos, in his original 1967 ANS Museum Notes article, thought these early Egyptian Alexanders were struck much earlier, but he later clarified his position in his 1974 Ph.D. dissertation, stating that he thought that they began in 324-322 BC, though most likely after Alexander III’s death. Price, in his 1991 corpus on the Alexander coinage, thought that the minting of Alexanders began upon the conquest of Egypt in 332, but this early date is not supported by the evidence. G. Le Rider, in his 1997 review Alexander's coinage and finances, agreed with a late date for the beginning of Alexanders in Egypt, though slightly earlier, circa 325/4 BC. C. Lorber, in an article in NC 2005, came to a similar conclusion regarding the late start of production, agreeing with Zervos that is was more likely after Alexander's death, circa 323 BC. Zervos, Price, and Lorber all think that the coinage began at Memphis, which had produced imitation Athenian tetradrachms under the Persians, and was later transferred to Alexandreia, while Le Rider thought it was at Alexandreia from the onset. Undoubtedly, the construction of Alexandreia was completed during the reign of Kleomenes, Ptolemy's predecessor as satrap, and Le Rider argued that Kleomenes would have established his headquarters there, as well as his mint. Although Lorber, in CPE, attributes the initial issues to Memphis, the question remains open. All examples of this early Ptolemaic issue were struck from dies of remarkable beauty, the present specimen exemplifying this artistry and boasting a splendid state of preservation.

This was one of the earliest issues of Alexander struck in Egypt and it is the ancestor of all subsequent Ptolemaic coinage. These early issues are well known because of their outstanding style.

L’insolito taglio di prova su un'emissione di Menfi suggerisce che la moneta potrebbe aver circolato al di fuori dell'Egitto e sarebbe stata saggiata a garanzia del nucleo d’argento a causa del "nuovo stile" del rovescio. Il taglio di prova è stato effettuato con cura per limitare il danno alla testa di Eracle, mostrando rispetto per l'immagine e l'arte della moneta. I bordi del taglio di prova sono affilati, freschi e non usurati, suggerendo che quasi subito dopo la moneta è stata riposta in un tesoretto. La moneta stessa è poco usurata, a indicare che dev’essere stata riposta non molto tempo dopo la coniazione, forse poco dopo la morte di Alessandro Magno, quando si è iniziata la lotta per la supremazia tra i suoi successori.

Tetradramma di Seleuco I Nicatore con il suo ritratto

La monetazione d’argento del primo re seleucide Seleuco I Nicatore (312-281 a. C.) è molto varia. Essa comprende una serie di tetradrammi e frazioni di peso attico del familiare tipo di Alessandro Magno con Eracle/Zeus, coniato in nome di Alessandro IV e Filippo III prima del 305/4 a. C. e in nome di Seleuco dopo questo anno. Oltre alla serie alessandrina, Seleuco I ha coniato un’importante serie di tetradrammi e frazioni d’argento per i suoi territori orientali con i tipi diZeus/Atena su un carro trainato da elefanti. Questa tipologia promuoveva Seleuco come potente conquistatore dell’Est.

Una rimarchevole serie d’argento di Susa che raffigura il ritratto elmato del re e Nike che incorona un trofeo celebra la vittoria a Ipsos e sembra sia stata prodotta principalmente per la circolazione sulla piattaforma iraniana. Seleuco, memore dei suoi soggetti nativi, continuò pure a coniare stateri principalmente per l’uso in Babilonia, ma in parte anche più a Est.

The trophy series of Seleukos was issued over an extended period, and used 67 obverse dies and at least 93 reverses that we are aware of. The type is generally assumed to commemorate the victories of Seleukos as he pushed eastwards into India, occupying territory as far as the Indus, and eventually waging war against the Mauryan Empire. This campaign against Chandragupta Maurya was however a failure. While there is no record of what transpired to prevent Seleukos achieving his aims, the two leaders eventually reached an accord whereby Seleukos ceded some of his easternmost territory in exchange for a gift of 500 war elephants. The massive beasts were to play a significant role in the coming wars of the Diadochi, in particular at the Battle of Ipsos in 301 BC.

The assertion that the trophy reverse commemorates a victory by Seleukos in the east or in the Upper Satrapies, and his subsequent assumption of a the royal title in 305/4 BC is problematic. The dating of the issue was proposed by Kritt (The Early Seleukid Mint of Susa, 1997) and subsequently accepted by the numismatic community seemingly without question. Moreover, the important detail of the trophy’s composition is ignored. The trophy is unquestionably built from Macedonian arms, as evidenced by the Vergina Sun (or Argead Star) clearly emblazoned on the shield. That this should therefore represent an eastern victory is impossible, particularly given the inconclusive nature of Seleukos’ campaign against Chandragupta, and its stale conclusion. The issue bears far more significance when viewed in the context of a victory over other Macedonians - for which we should look to the battle of Ipsos, in which Seleukos’ elephants played a decisive role in the victory over Antigonos.

Attorno al 306/0 a.C. la tipologia Zeus Nikeforo cominciò a sostituire la versione Zeus Etoforo. Nel momento in cui si manifestò questo cambiameno, la maggior parte delle zecche che l’avevano effettuato avevano già sostituito il nome di Alessandro con quello di Seleuco. Questo tetradramma rappresenta una delle rarissime occasioni in cui il tipo Nikeforo appare su una moneta che conserva ancora il nome di Alessandro (vedi SC p. 22).
