Tetradramma di Alessandro I Balas della zecca di Seleucia Pieria (NAC 114).

Ho postato in precedenza una mia dramma di Alessandro I Bala (‘Signore’) Epifane (‘Manifestazione del dio’), re di Siria dal 150 al 145 a. C., che sulle sue monete è raffigurato con mento forte e occhio incavato, e in alcune di esse tende ad assomigliare ad Alessandro il Grande. Su questo tetradramma ha lasciato il posto alla testa laureata di Zeus con lunghi riccioli e la barba piena, al (quasi) centro di un tondello molto grande.

Very rare and in a superb state of preservation. A bold portrait struck on a very large flan, light iridescent tone and extremely fine.

The Bisaltae were a Thracian or Pelasgian tribe inhabiting the reaches of the lower Strymon river valley in eastern Macedonia bordering the lands of Thrace to the east. The economy was one of pastoral-nomadism, although the aristocracy certainly exploited the silver mines in the mountainous region between them and the territory of the Krestones and Mygdones to their west, the bullion of which produced this handsome octodrachm. An interesting feature of these large coins, and also the larger issues of the Derrones as well as of Alexander I in Macedonia, is their manufacturing process. From the flattening that is always present on the reverse, it appears that the striking occurred in two distinct stages with the reverses and obverses having being stuck individually. First, the reverse die, which served merely as an ornamental device rather than having the functional purpose of pushing metal into the obverse die, was hammered against the planchet, then the planchet was turned over and struck again from the obverse die. This second striking caused some flattening on the reverse of the coin, as can be seen here in the slight flattening of the raised portions of the four inner divisions of the larger incuse square. The purpose of this unusual manufacturing process is not certain, but probably should be seen in the context of the massive size of the coins themselves. During Xerxes' invasion of Greece in 480 B.C., the Bisaltae refused assistance to the large Persian army. After they vacated the region following their costly campaign against the Greeks, Alexander I of Macedonia conquered and annexed the Bisaltaian homeland. In doing so he came to control the rich silver mines of the Pangaean district and subsequently struck his first coinage, which copies exactly these Bisaltaian octodrachms except that they are inscribed with his own name.

Apparently unique and unrecorded. An interesting and enigmatic issue, lovely iridescent tone and about extremely fine.

Strano che il pesante intervento di restauro tra h 12 e h 2 non sia dichiarato nella descrizione. In questa zona la moneta deve aver subito una seria corrosione alla quale hanno posto rimedio alla meglio.

Price 3964. A wonderful, spectacular coin, beautifully toned, of splendid style, and struck in high relief. Very small scuff on the obverse and minor scratches on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

The tetradrachms of Alexander from the mint of Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, are surely the most dramatically beautiful of all the coins struck in his name during his lifetime. The had previously been attributed to the king's new city of Alexandria, but it seems that the satrapy's governor preferred to retain the old mint used in Persian times since Memphis still remained Egypt's administrative center. The ability of the die engravers responsible for this issue was truly outstanding - the coins they produced have a majestic power, which is enhanced by their often extremely high relief. In fact, they have a sculptural quality that is quite different from the Alexander tetradrachms struck elsewhere. Stylistically this is one of the finest silver coins of Alexander ever made. Dr. Stoecklin Senior must have been very excited by Alexander's issues from Memphis: not only did he have the two splendid pieces here and in the following lot, there are another two below, 176 & 177 under Egypt (one struck under Alexander and the other during the reign of Philip III).

Questo tetradramma ha il fulmine come simbolo nel campo a sinistra del rovescio come il Price 3977 e il Price 3976, dai quali differisce per il monogramma sotto il trono.

Non mi risulta che un esemplare Price 3979 sia stato battuto in qualche asta.

Alessandro in Egitto e la zecca di Menfi

Alessandro Magno, dopo aver conquistato le basi navali della Persia lungo le coste dell'Asia Minore e della Siria-Palestina nella campagna contro il potente Impero persiano di Dario III, nel 332 a. C. marciò a sud verso l'Egitto dove rimase per circa sei mesi. Per quasi 200 anni l'Egitto era stato occupato dai Persiani che avevano mostrato relativamente poco rispetto per le antiche tradizioni ed erano profondamente impopolari, a differenza di Alessandro che fu salutato come Salvatore e Liberatore e gli fu offerta la doppia corona delle Due Terre. Annoverato come faraone a Menfi, l'antica capitale dell'Egitto, il 14 novembre del 332 a. C., il culmine della sua incoronazione fu quando il sommo sacerdote lo nominò 'figlio degli dei' secondo le tradizioni che risalivano a quasi 3.000 anni prima. I tetradrammi di Alessandro dalla zecca di Menfi con la rosa (Price 3971) e con la testa d’ariete coronata (Price 3964) come simboli sono sicuramente i più belli di tutte le monete coniate in suo nome quando era in vita. L'abilità degli incisori dei conii era davvero eccezionale ed è riflessa dalla maestosa potenza espressiva delle monete, messa in risalto dai rilievi spesso estremamente alti.

Il Price pubblica due altri tetradrammi con la rosa come simbolo, il 3970 e il 3970A, che differiscono per il monogramma sotto il trono di Zeus. Entrambi sono nella collezione ANS ma è riportata solo la foto del primo.
