2013d American quarter-dollar: Ft. McHenry

Da spiccioli la scorsa settimana, un nuovo quartiere "Parchi"–il 2013d Fort McHenry. Questo fu il primo di questi avevo visto—una moneta della zecca di Denver, come al solito—e noto un interessante bagmark sul collo di Washington (interessante perché un bagmark questo rilievo è alquanto insolito su una moneta di questo leggera).

Fort McHenry è, ovviamente, per gli americani una battaglia molto-celebrato (1814) contro gli inglesi durante la Guerra del 1812. Fallito l'assalto britannico contro Fort McHenry—e gli americani (1931) ottenne un inno nazionale ("The Star-Spangled Banner") a causa di esso—ma gli inglesi sbarcarono altrove e bruciarono tuttavia il nostro capitale.

L'inverso di questo quarter-dollaro raffigura una linea dall'inno: "E abbagliamento rosso razzi, bombe scoppiando in aria". Lungamente è stato un appuntamento fisso a eventi sportivi americani, per esempio, e una vecchia barzelletta su The Star-Spangled Banner è che la sua linea finale è "Play Ball!"

Due ultima osservazioni su Ft McHenry: 1) i cannoni non sono veterani della Guerra del 1812, ma invece di Guerra Civile vintage—quando noi li stavamo puntando a noi stessi; e 2) un lento in bicicletta intorno alla circonferenza del giardino del Forte è una bella cosa. La diga è stato—e spero ancora è—unfenced; non c'è niente affatto tra te e la Baia di Chesapeake ad eccezione di qualche metro di frangiflutti qui sotto. La brezza di mare è costante, e il sole...

From pocket change last week, a new “Parks” quarter—the 2013d Fort McHenry. This was the first of these I’d seen—a Denver-mint coin, as usual—and I note an interesting bagmark on Washington’s neck (interesting because a bagmark this prominent is somewhat unusual on a coin this lightweight).

Fort McHenry is, of course, for Americans the site of a much-celebrated battle (1814) against the British during the War of 1812. The British assault against Fort McHenry failed—and the Americans eventually (1931) gained a National Anthem (“The Star-Spangled Banner”) because of it—but the British landed elsewhere and burned our capital nevertheless.

The reverse of this quarter-dollar depicts a line from the anthem: “And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air.” One note on the “rockets,” examples of which are on display at the Fort: they look like giant (15-foot/c.5-meter) “bottle” rockets, like we shoot by the gross (144-count) on the 4^th of July. (Bottle rockets are so commonly seen that the giants at Ft. McHenry really made an impression.)

The Star-Spangled Banner is a famously difficult song for a single person to sing, but no matter…there is no shortage of opportunities to hear it sung. It has long been a fixture at American sports events, for example, and one old joke about The Star-Spangled Banner is that its final line is “Play Ball!”

Two last observations on Ft. McHenry: 1) the cannons are not veterans of the War of 1812, but instead are of Civil War vintage—when we were pointing them at ourselves; and 2) a slow bike ride around the circumference of the Fort’s grounds is a beautiful thing. The seawall was—and I hope still is—unfenced; there is nothing at all between you and the Chesapeake Bay except a few feet of breakwater below. The sea-breeze is constant, and in the sun….
