After putting down the mercenary revolt, Hamilcar Barca and other Carthaginians went to Spain to “start over” in the only remaining significant Carthaginian possession outside of North Africa. They extended Carthaginian influence beyond the Punic cities of southeastern Spain and utilized the local mineral resources to help re-establish the Carthaginian empire. Hamilcar drowned in 231 BC and was succeeded by his son-in-law, Hasdrubal, who founded Carthago Nova in 229 BC. Hasbrudal was assassinated in 221 BC. Hannibal Barca succeeded his brother-in-law. In 219 BC, Hannibal took Saguntum. Rome responded by declaring war and Hannibal made preparations to invade Italy. After Hannibal was in southern Italy during the Second Punic War, Spain continued to support his efforts until P. Cornelius Scipio (later Africanus) captured Carthago Nova in 209 BC. Carthaginian forces were driven out of Spain by 206 BC and Rome maintained control after the Second Punic War. ILLUSTRAZIONE: LA BATTAGLIA DI CANNE DEL 216 A.C. The Roman world was at risk of extinction in 409 when Visigoths under king Alaric occupied Italy, captured Romes granaries and laid siege to the great, walled capital. Faced with eventual starvation, the senate cooperated by electing one of their own members, Priscus Attalus, as emperor in opposition to Honorius, whose court was based in Ravenna. Attalus, a senator of Ionian Greek extraction, was known to Alaric, for in the previous year he had been the senates representative in negotiations with the king. Since he was a pagan, Attalus had to be baptized before he could be crowned. In the following year, 410, Alaric led part of his army north to challenge Honorius in Ravenna, but his venture failed and the Vandal king returned to Rome. In June he deposed Attalus (who was pardoned by Honorius), and late in August he led his armies into Rome, sacking the great city for three days, August 24 through 26. Every portable item of value, including hostages such as Priscus Attalus and the emperors half-sister Galla Placidia, was taken. Attalus remained a prisoner of the Visigoths until he was again hailed emperor against Honorius in 415 by Alarics successor Athaulf. His second reign was based in Gaul, not Rome, and it was equally brief. Attalus career as puppet emperor of the Goths ended in the spring of 416 when he was captured by Honorius soldiers and taken to Rome to be paraded through the streets. He was then banished to the Lipari islands where he lived out the rest of his days, having been relieved of his right thumb and forefinger in a symbolic gesture against any future revolt. Lot description: Britannicus. AD 41-55. Æ Sestertius (36mm, 27.00 g, 6h). Uncertain Balkan/Thracian mint. Struck under Claudius, circa AD 50-54. Bareheaded and draped bust left / Mars, barefoot, but wearing full military attire, including sagum (cape), advancing left, holding spear in outstretched right hand and round shield in left; S C across field. RIC I p. 130, note; von Kaenel, Thrakien, Type B, 5; BMCRE 226 (Claudius). Fine, dark green patina with touches of red, lightly smoothed and tooled. Rare. Tiberius Claudius Germanicus was born on 12 February AD 41, only a few weeks after his father, Claudius, became emperor. After Claudius' conquest of Britain in AD 43, the boy's name was changed to Tiberius Claudius Caesar Britannicus, and the sources refer to him simply as Britannicus. In AD 55, while dining with friends, he was poisoned and died. The murder was almost certainly ordered by Nero, who wanted to clear the way for his own succession to the throne. The attribution of the sestertii of Britannicus has been a matter of some speculation. Formerly, the issue had been attributed to Rome around the end of Claudius' reign when Britannicus adopted the toga virilis. Mattingly, however, demonstrated that such an attribution was problematic, since the Rome mint was not producing aes at that time. Instead, he assigned the type to the early years of Titus, when many restoration and commemorative issues were being struck, a logical assumption given the reported close friendship between the two. More recently, substantial numbers of Latin coins (sestertii and dupondii) in the name of Britannicus, Agrippina Jr., Nero Caesar, and Nero Augustus have been found in the Balkan region, and von Kaenel argued for a Thracian origin for the series. Von Kaenel's analysis is plausible, since the style and fabric of the coins, as well as the find spots, indeed suggest a Thracian mint, and such local issues would have been struck for use by the legions servicing the border. It is likely that the reverse alludes to a specific event of martial prowess of one of the moneyer's ancestors, but if so the precise details have been lost to us. Perhaps it relates to Quintus Minucius Thermus, consul in 193 BC, who, according to Livy, distinguished himself fighting the Ligurians: "Before the consul Lucius Quinctius arrived in his province, Quintus Minucius, in the neighborhood of Pisa, met the Ligures in a pitched battle; he killed nine thousand of the enemy, routed and put to flight the rest and drove them into their camp" (Livy XXXV, 21.7-8).
