Three-quarters facing horned head of Zeus Ammon, slightly left; all within wreath / Silphium plant. GPCG pl. 20, 61 (”this coin”). As made, attractively toned.

KYRENAICA, Kyrene. Second Revolt of the Kyrenaikans. Circa 305-300 BC. Æ Eighth Unit (10.5mm, 1.17 g, 7h). Head of Libya left / Gazelle standing left; monogram to left. Asolati 37C; SNG Copenhagen –; BMC 209bis. Near VF, dark brown surfaces, area of flat strike on obverse.

Tetradramma cirenaico con un grande frutto di silfio sormontato da una gazzella reclinata a d. (CNG E. A. 400)

KYRENAICA, Kyrene. Circa 500-480 BC. AR Tetradrachm (19.5mm, 15.61 g). Large silphion fruit surmounted by gazelle recumbent right / Rough incuse punch. Buttrey, Coins, Period I, Group 1B, 58 (same obv. die); SNG Copenhagen –; BMC –. Fine, toned, double struck on reverse. Extremely rare, possibly the fifth known.
 

Four examples of this issue were found in the excavations at Cyrene (Buttrey). No others have been published in collections or offered at public sale. Although these are supposed to have been struck on the Attic standard, all of the examples are light, falling between 15.61 and 16.39 grams. As noted by Buttrey, his arrangement of the early, plain incuse issues was arbitrary; thus, it is possible that this issue was the first coinage struck at Kyrene, on a different standard, before the decision was made to use the Attic, which persisted at the mint for some time.

KYRENAICA, Kyrene. Circa 500-480 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16mm, 16.69 g, 9h). The nymph Kyrene seated left on draped stool, touching silphium plant growing from ground before her; fruit of silphium plant behind / Horned head of Zeus-Ammon right within incuse square. Traité III 1803 = BMC 12a = Jameson 1346 = Kunstfreund 14 = NAC 59, lot 665; Triton VII, lot 383; Traité I 2017 var. (obv. type to right) and 2018 var. (forepart of Pegasos in place of fruit on obv.). Fine, crude strike, roughness. Extremely rare.

K-O/I-N/O-N Silphium plant with two pair of leaves and fruits. Asolati 61Aa. BMC 15. SNG Copenhagen 1276-7. Rare. The obverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.

ΘEYΦEI Bearded head of Zeus Ammon to left, with ram's horn over his ear. Rev. K-Y/P-A Silphium plant with two pair of leaves and fruits. BMC 165b and pl. XVI, 1 (this coin). SNG Copenhagen -. Warren 1359. Very rare. A beautiful piece of splendid late Classical style with an illustrious and exceptionally old pedigree. Good very fine.

From the Kleinkunst Collection, ex Leu 79, 31 October 2000, 795, Leu 13, 29 April 1975, 346 and Hess-Leu, 16 April 1957, 326, and from the collection of the Dukes of Gotha, acquired in 1712 by Duke Frederick II (1676-1732) from Count Anton Günther II of Schwarzburg-Sonderhausen-Arnstad (1653-1716).
