Tetradrammi lisimachei di piombo

Salve.

Nell’asta Roma Numismatics E-Sale 35 del 29 aprile scorso è comparso un esemplare in piombo del tetradramma d’argento di Lisimaco Thompson 159.

Kings of Thrace, Lysimachos PB 'Tetradrachm'. 305-281 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing horn of Ammon / Athena seated left, holding Nike and spear over shoulder, resting elbow on shield; BAΣIΛEΩΣ - ΛYΣIMAXOY on either side, bee to inner left and thunderbolt in exergue.

Cf. Thompson 159; Gitbud & Naumann 38, 69 (same dies); Gitbud & Naumann 33, 57 (same). 56.11g, 36mm, 8h. Very Fine. A rare and interesting piece.

 

La moneta, pesante più del triplo del corrispondente tetradramma d’argento, ha riscosso un interesse a mio avviso sorprendente essendo stata aggiudicata a un hammer quasi sestuplo del prezzo di partenza di 80 GBP, precisamente 460 GBP.

Notare che il prezzo è in sterline britanniche, che al cambio fanno 523 EUR e rotti. Ancor più sorprendente se si considera che tetradrammi in buon argento Thompson 159 hanno avuto quotazioni sui 300-500 USD in condizioni di conservazione rispettivamente BB e buon BB. E 300-500 USD sono 252-419 EUR al cambio attuale.

Il diametro è 40 mm e il peso arriva al quadruplo di quello di un tetradramma d’argento.

Il diametro supera I 40 mm ma il peso è più di 11 inferiore a quello del precedente esemplare, verosimilmente per lo spessore più piccolo.

Peter Rosa (1926-1990) was the owner of Becker Manufacturing Company in New York City and an avid admirer of the artistry of ancient coins. Since purchasing coins was beyond his means, he ordered casts of coins from the British Museum from which he created high quality replicas. Although considered by some as one the great numismatic craftsmen of the 20th century, his copies were never intended to deceive, but to educate the public about ancient art. The Rosa off-metal trial strikes offered for sale at Agora Auctions are Rosa's innovative craftsmanship. They are not second or third generation cast copies commonly found on the market today. This collection was purchased by Wayne Sayles directly from the Rosa family after his death. The dies themselves were donated to the ANS museum. La replica moderna di Peter Rosa presenta I colori caratteristici della patina del piombo, simile a quella che si può sviluppare sul tappi sigillo della teriaca che ho descritto in Exonumia. Responsabili della colorazione sono gli ossidi del piombo, precisamente il litargirio (PbO) giallo, il minio (2PbO.PbO₂) rosso arancione e l’ossido pulce (PbO₂) così chiamato perché si presenta come polvere bruna scura.

Recentemente è comparsa in MA Shop questa riproduzione in bronzo di un tetradramma di Lisimaco.
