SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Demetrios I Soter, 162-150 BC. AE (Bronze, 25 mm, 15.67 g, 1 h), uncertain mint 83, possibly in Cilicia or Northern Syria. Head of a lion with long mane to left. Rev. [Β]ΑΣΙΛΕΩ[Σ] - ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ Head of a boar to right; behind to left, monogram of AB. SC 1660.1. Very rare and among the finest known. Light smoothing, otherwise, good very fine.

SELEUKID EMPIRE. Demetrios I Soter. 162-150 BC. Æ (19.5mm, 8.15 g, 1h). Uncertain Mint 83, probably in northern Syria. Head of the Molossian Hound left / Forepart of lynx right; monogram below. SC 1663; HGC 9, 828. Good VF, earthen dark brown patina. Exceptional for issue. Very rare.

SELEUKID EMPIRE. Demetrios I Soter. 162-150 BC. Serrate Æ (17.4mm, 4.56 g, 10h). Antioch on the Orontes mint. Head of horse left / Head of elephant right. SC 1646; HGC 9, 833. Good VF, dark green to black patina with earthen highlights/deposits, smoothed. Very rare.

Aus einer Serie Bronzemünzen geprägt von Demetrius mit verschiedenen Tierarten (wohl nicht alle "relating to the hunt" (!), Houghton-Lorber-Hoover). Die Münzstätte ("Uncertain Mint 83") ist unbekannt.

Sul rovescio non è raffigurata la parte anteriore della lince (come nella moneta SC 1663 al post # 2 ), ma la testa della lince, in accordo alla classificazione SC 1662. Quindi, nella didascalia, non 'forepart' ma 'head'.

L’esemplare Molosso/Parte anteriore di lince al post # 2, uno dei più rari della serie, è stato stimato $1000 e aggiudicato a $2500 nella CNG 109 del settembre 2018.

Quest’altro esemplare comparso alla Triton V del 2002 e stimato USD 2000, è stato aggiudicato a ben USD 3500 (sedici anni fa!).

SNG Spaer -; Houghton, CSE, 556 var. (monogram); SNG Copenhagen -; Laffaille, "Choix de Monnaies Grecques en Bronze," 178 = Laffaille 573 (this coin). Good VF, dark green, almost black patina, under some scattered earthen encrustation, a few minor adjustment marks. One of the finest known of the type. Very rare. ($2000) Ex Maurice Laffaille Collection (Münzen und Medaillen Auktion 76, 19-20 September 1991), lot 573.

Curioso il fatto che, come si legge nella didascalia, la lince è stata scambiata per un grifone.
