Hawaii (Stack’s Bowers 20 March 2020)

Lot 4510. 1886 Hawaii Plantation Token. Grove Ranch Plantation. 12 1/2 Cents. Medcalf-Russell TE-16. Very Fine, Environmental Damage.
Ruddy sandy-brown surfaces are rough overall with light to moderate pitting throughout that further explains our qualifier. Well centered on both sides, the digit 6 in the date and the middle star on the obverse are softly struck, typical of the type. A vertical scratch on the obverse is noted. This is a rare token from a plantation located in Haliimaile on the island of Maui. Grove Ranch Plantation was started in 1850 as the Haliimaile Plantation, changing names four times until assuming that title in 1880. It ceased operations in 1963 when its operations were taken over by the Maui Agriculture Company.

Pensa che questo gettone della Grove Ranch Plantation del valore di 12 centesimi e mezzo nel 1886 è stimato oggi 1.500 USD nonostante il graffio verticale sul diritto e lo stato generale di conservazione. Sicuramente dev’essere molto raro.

Dalla didascalia proviene da una piantagione situata a Haliimaile sull'isola di Maui. La Grove Ranch Plantation è stata avviata nel 1850 come piantagione di Haliimaile, cambiando i nomi quattro volte fino ad assumere quel titolo nel 1880. Sempre nelle Hawaii ma della piantagione Wailuku questo gettone del 1871 da 12 ½ cents con la stella marina (Stack’s Bowers 20 March 2020).

Glossy copper-brown surfaces with a few wispy handling marks and tiny planchet pits in and around the centers. All design elements on the HI side are readily appreciable, the starfish quite sharp for our assigned grade. The other side is softer with some peripheral features faint to indistinct, although the date is legible, denomination nearly so. Wailuku tokens are rare and seldom offered in today's numismatic marketplace, and we suspect more than one specialist will queue up for this rarity when it crosses the auction block. On this variety the uppermost point of the starfish touches the lower right base of the H in HI.
