AV aureus (20mm, 8.16 gm, 2h). NGC Choice MS 5/5 - 5/5. Rome, 46 BC, Aulus Hirtius, praetor. C•CAESAR-COS•TER, veiled female head (Vesta or Pietas?) right / A•HIRTIVS•P R, lituus, oenochoe, and securis, all turned left (emblems of the augurate and pontificate). Crawford 466/1. Sydenham 1017-1018. Hirtia 1 and Julia 22. Calicó 36. Exceptionally well preserved with bright, flashy surfaces. Aulus Hirtius was a key supporter of Caesar, who might have ended up as Caesar's successor in power had events taken a different turn. An experienced soldier, he served as one of Caesar's legates in Gaul from about 54 BC and was an envoy to Pompey in 50 BC. He served Caesar loyally during the Civil War against Pompey and his successors in 48-45 BC. Hirtius was appointed as Caesar's mintmaster in Rome in 46 BC, and it was then that he struck the first truly large issue of gold aurei from the spoils of Caesar's campaigns. These aurei, which bear a rather enigmatic veiled female head on the obverse, were used to pay Caesar's soldiers after the great triumphal parade. After Caesar's assassination, Hirtius initially supported Marc Antony but, after taking over as Consul in 43 BC, he raised an army against Antony at the instigation of Cicero and Octavian. His army defeated Antony at Mutina in April of 43 BC, but Hirtius was killed in the fighting; his consular colleague Pansa died days later, leaving Octavian and Antony masters of Rome. Modern historians owe Hirtius a debt of gratitude for preserving and editing Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic and Civil Wars.

RIC I 125a. RSC 432. Exceptional portrait, highlighted by exquisite cabinet toning. The civil wars at the end of Nero's reign began with the revolt of the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, Gaius Julius Vindex, ca. March AD 68, followed quickly by Lucius Clodius Macer, legate in Roman North Africa. Vindex appealed to Servius Sulpicius Galba, then governor of Hispania Tarraconensis, to lead the revolt. Galba accepted and was elevated to emperor by the Spanish legions at Carthago Nova in April. Although produced in large numbers by regional mints to pay the military forces in play during this tumultuous period, the anonymous Civil War denarii types are relatively rare today in comparison to coinage minted during AD 69 in the names of Galba (8 June AD 68-15 January AD 69), Otho (15 January-16 April), Vitellius (16 April-22 December) and Vespasian (22 December 69-24 June 79). This interesting Civil War type was struck after the elevation of Galba, likely by pro-Vitellian forces who refused to accept Galba as emperor, perhaps by his commander Fabius Valens, in southern Gaul shortly before the First Battle of Bedriacum on 14 April AD 69. The bust of Jupiter Optimus Maximus Capitolinus symbolizes the invincible might of Rome, accompanied by Vesta, promoting the idea of the Empire's permanence. https://coins.ha.com/itm/ancients/roman-imperial/ancients-civil-war-ad-68-69-ar-denarius-18mm-333-gm-7h-ngc-au-4-5-3-5-fine-style/a/3089-31057.s?type=CoinArchives3089 HID02906262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved Estimate: 6000-8000 USD 1 Cita Awards

This rare style depicts Kerberos, the guardian of the entrance to the Underworld and the monstrous offspring of Echidna, the mother of all monsters, and Typhon, the deadliest monster of Greek mythology. Kerberos is the focus of the last of the Twelve Labors of Herakles and is also central to the story of Orpheus's journey to the Underworld to retrieve his love Eurydike. While a well known part of Greek mythology, depictions of Kerberos in coinage are rare, found only on coins minted in this period by Epeiros, Cumae, and Kyzikos. Due to this rarity, the type serves as an incredibly beautiful example of an important subject of Greek mythology. Estimate: 10000 USD Cita Awards

The identification of the male on the obverse has long been debated. M. F. Lenormant first suggested Phrixos sacrificing the ram with the golden fleece, but Greenwell preferred Odysseus slaying the animal Circe provided him before his descent into Hades, in part due to the figure being bearded, which indicated an older individual, which contrasts with the youthful portraits traditionally given to Phrixos. Lot description: Thraco-macedonian tribes. The Letaioi. AR Stater (22 mm, 9.36 g), c. 500-480 BC. Obv. ΛETAI, bearded Centaur carrying off protesting Maenade; below, dotted ground line. Rev. Crested Corinthian helmet right within incuse square. Svoronos, Hell. 38, 4 and pl. VI, 2. St. Topalov, Ancient Thrace. Contributions to the Study of the early Thracian Tribal Coinage and it's Relations to the Coinage of the Odrysians and the Odrysian Kingdom during 6th - 4th c. B.C. (2003), 222, 30.Traité I 153 ('Lete'). Extremely rare and of the highest interest. A beautiful coin of powerful archaic style. Scuff in the incuse field on the reverse, otherwise nearly extremely fine / very fine. This coin is part of a series of Staters issued by Thraco-macedonian tribes in the early 5th Century. Its motif is an adaptation of the silver coinage of the island of Thasos that had become the predominant trade currency in the region. The tribes, however, replaced the Thasian Satyr with a wild Centaur more appropriate for the wild lands they were living in. The vast majority of these coins carry no ethnic and therefore make it impossible to ascribe them to specific tribes, but a few exceptional issues - such as ours - come with the ethnic spelled out. We therefore know that our coin was struck by the Letaioi, an obscure tribe in the mountainous region of the borderland between Thrace and Macedon that was famous for its rich silver deposits. The exceptionally well crafted obverse die in its utterly powerful archaic style makes it possible, if not likely, that the tribe was rich enough to hire a Greek master die cutter for this special issue. Whoever the artist was, he beautifully captured the motion and energy of his dramatic coin design while rendering the Centaur and the Maenade's faces in a most amazingly calm and noble Archaic style.
