Imitazioni ‘barbare’ e falsi moderni della monetazione imperiale macedone

Come si legge nella didascalia del distatere celtico, in un articolo del 1988 dedicato a queste emissioni Ermanno Arslan, il nostro storico numismatico che si è laureato all’Università di Pavia quando io ero frequentavo ancora le lezioni di chimica, suggerisce che possano essere Celtico-Dacie provenienti dalla Transilvania. Arslan riporta le opinioni di molti studiosi che hanno espresso l’idea sull’origine europea di queste monete e l’aneddotica provenienza di due esemplari, uno che si dice trovato ad Adrianopoli e un altro - sorprendentemente - nelle vicinanze di Milano. Arslan divide la serie in tre gruppi, ciascuna con piccole variazioni di stile, dettagli del disegno, peso e metrologia, e abbina questo distatere agli stateri del gruppo III, nonostante manchi del diagnostico monogramma sotto il mento.

There are a number of imitations of Alexander III tetradrachms from Arados. Although it is not certain if this coin is imitative or simply engraved by an unskilled, but official, hand, the low weight suggests the former.

Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet ornamented with "radiate" coiled serpent / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; blundered legend to right, trident head to left. Cf. Price 172 (Amphipolis). A fascinating imitation, apparently made with a lead core covered with gold foil (accounting for heavy weight). Extremely rare. Extremely Fine. From the R.G. Collection. Ex CNG 61 (25 September 2002), lot 427.

A highly unusual imitative issue, likely struck in the Thracian tribal regions circa 330-290 BC. This coin was reportedly found in small hoard of Alexander staters that included a number of imitations. Unlike most fourrées, it's also not lighter than the official coin it copies but heavier. This likely indicates a lead interior, though it's slightly larger than official Alexander staters. It also appears to be coated with thin gold foil rather than thicker gold plating that's more common with gold fourrées. A tiny part of the foil is loose near the rim on the obverse at 7:00. A minority of ancient Greek-era gold fourrées were covered in thin gold foil, sometimes in multiple layers, instead of thicker gold plating.

The missing M in the left reverse field and the crude monogram in a wreath below Nike's left wing are two stylistic indications that this is a contemporary imitation.

La cosa strana – per non dire intrigante -  dell’imitazione di cui sopra venduta come tale all’Electronic Auction 417 della CNG nel 2018 è che la sua raffigurazione del rovescio è praticamente identica a quella dello statere venduto come autentico nella CNG 261 del 2011 (foto sottostante).

Stando alla didascalia, lo statere prototipo di questa imitazione è il Price 164. Però il Price 164 è il prototipo dell’imitazione al post # 111, con il fulmine come simbolo, mentre qui il simbolo è una testa di tridente rivolta verso il basso. Inoltre c'è un monogramma sotto l'ala della Nike.

Il prototipo dell’imitazione RN 6 è invece lo statere Price 180, sempre della zecca di Anfipoli ma con una testa di tridente rivolta verso il basso e un monogramma sotto l’ala sinistra della Nike come simboli di controllo (CNG 94).

Ierapoli Bambice era una antica città della Siria importante per il suo santuario commageno, dedicato alla venerazione della dea della natura siriana Atargatis. I Seleucidi ne fecero la principale stazione intermedia della strada che collegava Antiochia a Seleucia sul Tigri. Sotto di loro divenne famosa come la "città del santuario" e poi come "città sacra".

Se ben ricordo, questa città era stata citata da Cesare Augusto in un suo post sui Parti.
