Commentaire à propos de cet exemplaire: Ce bronze, très proche des prototypes grecs, semble être une imitation ou une monnaie importée. Historique: Sous ce titre sont regroupés généralement tous les monnayages qui ne possèdent pas d'attribution précise. Parfois, le terme de 'Celtes de l'Est' est proposé. Après que les Celtes aient pillé Delphes et se soient répandus en Grèce et en Asie Mineure, ils s'emparent d'une quantité importante de butin, grâce à leurs rapines. Les rois héllénistiques, Diadoques ou Epigones les utilisèrent comme mercenaires dans leurs armées où le salaire moyen était normalement d'un statère d'or correspondant à cinq tétradrachmes attiques ou vingt drachmes attiques. Les prototypes qui représentaient la tête d'Héraklès avec le Zeus assis au revers furent largement copiés et imités dans tout le Pont-Euxin, le nord de la Macédoine et de la Thrace. La phase finale du monnayage se produit à la fin du IIe siècle ou au début du premier siècle avant J.-C. où il ne subsiste des traits du droit et du revers ainsi que des légendes plus qu'une face bombée d'une pièce pratiquement lisse des deux côtés.

Price p. 506 notes that the ‘barbarous’ copies of Alexander III tetradrachms differ from contemporary imitations in that they were meant not to defraud but rather to provide coinages for the local economies in areas on the fringes of the classical world.

CELTIC, Lower Danube, Uncertain tribe. 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 16.54 g, 10h). Philip III imitative type. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; “die break” connecting nose to outer circle / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monograms in left field, Z below throne. Lanz 904; CCCBM I S191; cf. KMW 1468. Good VF, toned. Well struck for issue.

The “die break” on the obverse of these types was intentionally engraved into the die for unknown reasons.

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Subaeratus, 31 mm, 15.96 g, 12 h), irregular mint, imitating Phaselis, CY 11 = 208/7, but circa 201/0-195/4. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev.AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, IA above Φ. Cf. Price 2849 (for prototype). A very well made contemporary forgery of a Phaselis mint issue from 208/7 BC. Very minor breaks in plating, otherwise, extremely fine.

Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow in his right hand and resting his left on his bow. A curious contemporary imitation with a portrait of powerful style. Very fine.

Tra la fine del III secolo e l’inizio del II da alcune città greche d’Asia Minore furono coniate tetradracme in nome e al tipo di Alessandro il Grande. Queste due sono di Phaselis.

La zecca di Faselide ha emesso almeno una tipologia di tetradrammi in nome e nei tipi di Alessandro Magno per ciascun anno civico, coprendo il periodo dal 218 al 186 a. C. (Price 2831 – 2875).

I tetradrammi imitativi possono essere suberati come quelli dei post # 165, # 64 e # 63, ai quali posso aggiungere questo della CNG Electronic Auction 427 dell’agosto scorso.

Il tuo tetra è un bel Price 2868 emesso nell’anno civico 25 di Faselide, corrispondente al 194/3 a. C. circa. Non vedo contromarche e quindi il peso dovrebbe essere tra 16,5 e 17 g.
