Four examples of this issue were found in the excavations at Cyrene (Buttrey). No others have been published in collections or offered at public sale. Although these are supposed to have been struck on the Attic standard, all of the examples are light, falling between 15.61 and 16.39 grams. As noted by Buttrey, his arrangement of the early, plain incuse issues was arbitrary; thus, it is possible that this issue was the first coinage struck at Kyrene, on a different standard, before the decision was made to use the Attic, which persisted at the mint for some time.

ΑΡΙ[Σ]-ΤΟΜΗΔΕΟΣ Bearded head of Zeus Ammon to left, with ram's horn over his ear. Rev. Κ - Υ / Ρ - Α (retrograde) Silphium plant with three pairs of leaves. BMC 93 and pl. XII, 1 (same dies). McClean 9938 and pl. 375, 5 (same dies). SNG Copenhagen 1191 (same dies). Rare. Nicely toned and of a refined classical style, with a particularly fine head of Zeus Ammon. Some scratches on the reverse and with slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, good very fine.

The delicate and carefully engraving of this obverse die sets it apart from most of its contemporaries: the others are much more coarse in execution and lack the nobleness of this piece. It can best be compared to the finest heads of Zeus from Olympia.

The rider is shown here at what was probably the end of a race, riding slowly to calm his horse down after his exertions. The way he is rubbing the horse's neck with his left hand makes the affection the rider has for his horse very clear.

La Cirenaica era famosa nel mondo greco e romano per il santuario oracolare di Zeus Ammone e la coltivazione della pianta del silfio. Il primo era un tempio situato nell'oasi desertica di Siwah che originariamente era dedicato a una divinità nativa libica poi sincretizzatasi sia con il dio della fertilità egiziano Amon sia con lo Zeus greco. L'oracolo era già noto nel mondo greco nel quinto secolo a. C. ma divenne famoso dopo che fu visitato da Alessandro Magno che ebbe qui conferma della sua origine divina, che mamma Olimpiade aveva sempre riconosciuto. Zeus Ammone si distingue facilmente dalle altre raffigurazioni di Zeus per le sue corna d'ariete, una caratteristica presa dall'iconografia di Amon egiziano. In questo didramma Zeus è raffigurato in vivace stile ellenistico che riflette l'influenza del vicino Egitto tolemaico.

Si pensa che il Silfio fosse una varietà estinta di finocchio gigante usato nell'antichità per condimenti e medicine. Cresceva solo in una stretta striscia costiera della Cirenaica e veniva usato come cura per una varietà di disturbi tra cui tosse, mal di gola, febbre, indigestione, dolori generali e persino pazzia. È stato però suggerito che la pianta sarebbe stata più apprezzata e desiderata per l’uso come contraccettivo. La raccolta e la richiesta eccessiva portarono all'estinzione della pianta nel primo secolo d. C. (sembra che l'ultimo stelo di silfio sia stato inviato a Nerone nel 54-68 d. C.).

La moneta è di notevole importanza per il fatto di non essere stata battuta in nome di Cirene ma piuttosto della confederazione creata in Cirenaica dai filosofi Demophon ed Ekdemos nel 250 a. C. circa. Questi due intellettuali di Megalopoli ebbero l'opportunità di sperimentare l'organizzazione costituzionale della Cirenaica in questo anno grazie alla morte di Magas, che aveva governato Cirene come re dal 276 a. C., e alla fine cruenta del breve matrimonio della figlia di Magas, Berenice, con Demetrio il Bello. Il koinon di Demofonte ed Ekdemos sopravvisse per circa quattro anni, fino al 246 a. C., quando Tolomeo III Euergete fece valere il suo diritto a lungo rivendicato di sposare Berenice e annettere la Cirenaica all'Egitto.

Ophellas, c. 350-308 BC, was the son of the Macedonian Sellenus and came from Pella. He followed Alexander to the East and was a galley commander on the Indus during the expedition to India in 326. After Alexander’s death he followed Ptolemy and became his governor of Cyrene after disposing of the Spartan mercenary leader Thibron, who was ravaging the area. Ophellas was married to a Eurydice daughter of Miltiades, a descendent of the famous Miltiades of the 5th century. There was a revolt in 313, which was rapidly put down, but in 309 Ophellas was lured into an alliance against Carthage with Agathokles of Syracuse, who treasonously betrayed and murdered him.

Circa tre o quattro generazioni dopo la fondazione di Cirene, nel 570 o 560 a.C. fu fondato un nuovo insediamento, Barce, situato a circa settantacinque miglia a ovest lungo la costa da Cirene e a sedici miglia nell'entroterra, in mezzo a una vasta e fertile pianura.

Lo spunto per la nuova colonia è stata una faida tra i fratelli della famiglia regnante Battiade di Cirene, allora guidata da Arcesilao II. Raramente una lite familiare ha avuto conseguenze così positive: Barce divenne una delle città greche più prospere del Nordafrica, tanto da rivaleggiare con la capitale. Come Cirene, si sottomise al dominio persiano alla fine del VI secolo a.C., ma sembra che la popolazione di Barce godesse ancora di un buon grado di autonomia prima che venisse inscenata una rivolta generale. Il governatore persiano dell'Egitto, Aryandes, rispose con grande forza, distruggendo la città e portando in cattività la maggior parte della popolazione. Barce si riprese con relativa rapidità, senza dubbio grazie alle sue risorse. Quando fu coniato il tetradramma del post precedente, la città aveva recuperato gran parte dei suoi vantaggi commerciali. Se i disegni delle monete possono essere presi come prova, sembra che il prodotto principale di Barce in questo periodo fosse la pianta di silphium. Vero e proprio toccasana, si dice che avesse centinaia di usi medicinali e cosmetici, oltre a essere una fonte di cibo. Era indigena della Cirenaica e pare abbia resistito a tutti i tentativi di coltivazione di massa. Il valore del silphium come fonte di cibo per il bestiame e la popolarità del suo succo nei mercati regionali e stranieri contribuirono alla sua estinzione entro il I secolo d.C. È spesso raffigurato in modo molto dettagliato sulle monete e Robinson, nella sua opera del 1927 che fungeva da volume finale di "A Catalogue of the Greek Coins" del British Museum, è stato in grado di identificare le tre principali varianti della sua rappresentazione.
